A man who 'buried his head in the sand' after being charged over a 'heated argument' last summer ended up in jail during the coronavirus crisis.

Thomas Eardley, 41, was arrested and remanded in custody last month after he twice failed to show up to court hearings. A judge said he had originally considered sparing Eardley jail, but after failing to co-operate and turn up to court, Eardley was sentenced to almost five months in prison.

Manchester Crown Court heard that Eardley was in a phone box on Cheetham Hill Road, at about 7.45pm on July 7 last year, when another man approached him.
