A black banner at the centre of Melapalayam in Tamil Nadu seeks ‘Azadi’—both from the coronavirus and the Citizenship Amendment Act.
In all likelihood, the banner sprung up hours after a dozen new covid-19 cases were detected in this neighbourhood on the western edge of Tirunelveli on 31 March.
On 1 April, Tamil Nadu announced a dramatic spike in infection count, with 110 new cases within 24 hours. Nearly all the new cases were traced back to the large religious gathering in Delhi organized by the Tablighi Jamaat in mid-March, before the nationwide lockdown was announced.
Authorities said around 1,100 people from Tamil Nadu had attended the event. Out of the 658 people tested so far, 190 were found to be positive.
