It's a sad truth that not all dogs get the best start in life. But as these pups prove, just because you have a rough beginning it doesn't necessarily define where you end up.

In the UK around 130,000 dogs are given to rehoming charities every year, each with their own backstory. Thankfully many families are willing to open their homes and give these pets the love they deserve.

As part of the Butcher's Lockdown Dog Heroes competition, we have heard from many readers eager to share the story of life in lockdown with their rescue dog.

And with the competition now in its final stages, we spoke to the owners of our regional winners about what makes their pup special.
