Zack Steffen's Manchester City nightmare is set to end with a return to the USA in the January transfer window. Steffen signed for City in 2019 for around £7m after impressing in the MLS at Columbus Crew, immediately spending a year on loan at Fortuna Dusseldorf in the Bundesliga.

On his return to City, Steffen spent two seasons as Ederson's number two under Pep Guardiola, making 21 appearances. After City made the move to sign Stefan Ortega, Steffen was sent out on loan to Middlesbrough in the Championship in an attempt to play regularly and force his way into the USA's 2022 World Cup squad.

While that was unsuccessful, he made 45 appearances for Boro as they reached the play-offs under Michael Carrick.
