India recorded 159 new covid cases in the last 24 hours, the union health ministry said on Sunday. The covid cases have been drastically declining after the recent surge due to the XBB.1.16 Omicron variant.
The number of active cases declined to 3,343 and 531,880 deaths have been reported since the onset of the pandemic. Health experts say that the number of hospital admissions has also come down with a lesser number of covid cases being reported.
However, people who are elderly and have comorbid conditions are still vulnerable to catch the infection. Furthermore, doctors have recommended such people to take their booster dose if not done yet and follow covid appropriate behavior.
It may be noted that the XBB.1.16 is the covid-19 variant which was responsible for the surge in the last few months. In addition to this, scientists say that people in India have developed hybrid immunity (due to vaccination and natural infection), therefore, the present covid-19 variants will not be able cause hospitalization and severity as it is mild in nature.
