Johnny Vegas says volunteering in his local community during the pandemic has helped him cope with the grief of losing his parents.

The comedian has spent lockdown transporting care packages for NHS staff and vulnerable and elderly people in his home town of St Helens, Merseyside.

He said helping people in the community with the Steve Prescott Foundation, for which he is an ambassador, has been one of the most important experiences of his adult life.

Johnny, whose real name is Michael Pennington, said: “It’s like some cloud has lifted from me – I honestly feel like this has given me an opportunity to heal.” He said the experience forced him to accept he was angry at his parents for dying.
