A vicious typhoon in the Philippines has resulted in more than 50,000 people having to use cramped emergency shelters during the coronavirus pandemic.

Typhoon Ambo, also known as Typhoon Vongfong, has battered the nation with winds in excess of 120mph, making it as strong as a category 3 hurricane when it first made landfall today.

In terrifying footage, the wind whips through palm trees and batters homes while gigantic waves in the harbours have stranded fishing boats.

More images posted on social media show trees and power lines coming down and roofs being clean ripped off houses by the winds.
