Police: Philadelphia man killed in single-vehicle crash on I-495 in Delaware

DOVER, Del. - Delaware State Police is investigating a fatal single motor-vehicle collision on I-495 on Saturday morning. According to police, at approximately 3:57 a.m., a 35-year-old Philadelphia man in a 2016 Mercedes Benz was traveling southbound on I-495 south of the Philadelphia Pike when it crossed over the partial left shoulder and struck the guardrail. Authorities say as a result of hitting the guardrail, the vehicle traveled southwest, crossed the three southbound travel lanes, rolled down a grass embankment and struck a concrete support and DELDOT pole. According to police, the car also overturned and came to rest on its roof in the area of East Holly Oak Road. Authorities say the driver, who has not yet been identified, was not properly restrained and was pronounced dead at the scene. NEWARK, Del. - Officers with the Newark Police Department say wo people are in the hospital with life-threatening injures after a train hit their car. According to police, the incident happened just after 2 a.m. on Saturday in the area of the CSX railroad crossing at West Main Street and New London Road. Officer responded to the scene and found that one vehicle had been hit by a CSX train that was traveling eastbound, according to authorities. Delaware County passes emergency ordinance in response to recent Crozer Health closures

MEDIA, Pa. - The Delaware County Council passed an emergency ordinance stating long-term care facilities and hospitals must provide notice to the county when developing plans to close long-term care facilities, hospitals or large portions of hospitals.This comes in the wake of a series of temporary or permanent suspensions and closures by Crozer Health.The ordinance requires 180-day notice be given to the county of decisions to close all or portions of a hospital or units of a hospital. For example, 180-days notification of the closing of ambulance services, behavioral health departments, labor and delivery or ERs must be given to the county.The county is also requiring establishments to provide closing plans to the Delaware County Health Department no later than 120 days from the anticipated date of closure.Beginning in January of this year, Crozer Health has closed or suspended a number of health units, including its maternity ward at Delaware County Memorial Hospital and emergency room services at Springfield Hospital, among others.The ordinance also states specific information for the continuance of patient care must be included in any closure plan, as well as plans for where to place emergency department patients, dealing with medical records and how communities will be accommodated for future care.The county let it be known that any failure to comply with any part of the ordinance will result in court action. William Tatman, 43, is facing multiple charges after leading Delaware State Police on a pursuit in a stolen car. REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. - Delaware State Police is investigating after a man allegedly stole a car and led police on a pursuit across the state. Police say troopers responded to the 20,000 block of Coastal Highway in Rehoboth Beach just after 5 p.m. on Saturday. According to investigators, a suspect, later identified as 43-year-old William Tatman, was seen going through vehicles on the property and he was confronted by a witness. Tatman then fled towards the Loft apartments across the road and got into a 2006 Infiniti M35 that was running in the back of the complex, police say. Authorities say troopers saw Tatman driving off in the car as the 21-year-old car owner getting dragged as he tried to stop him. Investigators say the trooper activated his emergency lights and sirens in an effort to stop the suspect, but he fled in the victim's car. Police say the pursuit began westbound on the Lewes-Georgetown Highway where the suspect tried to strike a trooper who was trying to deploy stop sticks. PHILADELPHIA - Delaware State Police is investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that sent four to the hospital and killed a teenager in Lewes, Delaware. According to police, the crash happened on Friday at 2:10 p.m. Investigators say a Honda CR-V traveling eastbound on Lewes-Georgetown Highway (Route 9) was approaching the intersection at Ebb Tide Drive when a 2009 Ram 1500 traveling westbound on the highway.The Honda failed to observe the stopped traffic and swerved into the westbound lane where the Ram swerved towards the shoulder, state police say. Police say the vehicles crashed "in a near head-on collision" and the Honda overturned and struck a utility pole before coming to a stop. According to investigators, five people were in the Honda, including an 18-year-old male and 17-year-old female from Bear, an 18-year-old female from Wilmington, and a 16-year-old female and 17-year-old male from Middletown. All of the passengers were transported to local hospitals with two having non-life-threatening injuries, two in critical condition and one who died from injuries at the hospital. According to police, 17-year-old Dakhyi Floyd of Middletown was identified as the teen who died. The 77-year-old driver of the Ram was treated and released from an area hospital, police say. PHILADELPHIA - The early preview of summer will end overnight as temperatures migrate back to more seasonable levels ahead of Easter weekend.A round of quick-moving showers that spawned brief Severe Thunderstorm Warnings on Thursday afternoon will drag cooler air into the Delaware Valley to stunt temperatures that previously reached into the 80s. Most of the region is in the clear, but areas towards the New Jersey coast should brace for severe weather expected before 7 p.m.Forecasters expect dry and partly cloudy conditions overnight, but temperatures will be noticeably colder in the low-to-mid 40s. Conditions will rally on Friday with a nice mix of sun and clouds to help kick off Easter weekend. Forecasters expect temperatures to approach 70 degrees in most parts of the region. Similar conditions will follow on Saturday with the chance of some nighttime showers that will help plunge temperatures for Easter Sunday.

Delaware Police arrest man, 50, for 8th DUI offense

Delaware State Police arrest 50-year-old Richard Cook for his 8th DUI offense. GEORGETOWN, Del. - Delaware State Police arrested a man and charged him with his eighth DUI offense after a crash on Monday. On April 11, just before 3:00 p.m., state troopers responded to an accident in Georgetown, Del. Police say when they arrived to the scene, they found a black Nissan Quest, which had overturned onto its side in a wooded area near Dupont Boulevard. Police say Richard Cook, 50, was behind the wheel and two passengers, a 49-year-old woman and a 45-year-old man, both sustained non-life threatening injuries and were transported to Bayhealth Sussex Hospital. Police conducted a DUI investigation and took Cook in to custody at the scene. After searching Cook's vehicle, police say they found 2.04 grams of marijuana, suspected liquid heroin, drug paraphernalia, 2 fixed-knife blades, and a firearm. Authorities learned that Cook's driver's license was suspended, and he had been convicted for seven prior DUI offenses. He was charged with Driving Under the Influence of Drugs, Carrying a Concealed Firearm, and other related offenses. Cook was committed on a $39,501 cash bond.

Frank Deshields, 52, of New Castle is being sought in connection to the fatal stabbing of a man outside of a New Castle motel. NEW CASTLE, Del. - Police in Delaware are searching for a suspect accused of fatally stabbing a man outside of a motel in New Castle on Sunday. According to Delaware State Police, 52-year-old Frank Deshields is being sought by authorities. Police say troopers responded to The Super Lodge on West Avenue for a reported stabbing. According to authorities, troopers found a 45-year-old New Castle man outside of the motel with a stab wound to his upper torso. He was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, authorities say. Investigators say Deshields is a suspect in the case and an arrest warrant was obtained for first-degree murder and weapon charges. The investigation is active and ongoing, according to authorities.

Authorities say state police began investigating a series of copper wire thefts from the 900 block of Center Road on March 25. During the thefts, the suspects damaged the victim's property and removed about $50,000 worth in copper wiring, investigators say. According to police, the two were developed as suspects. ___MORE LOCAL HEADLINESOn April 8, police took both men into custody at Eastern Metal Recycling where they were attempting to sell the stolen copper wiring, authorities say.
