PHILADELPHIA - Federal law enforcement officials announced charges for eight people suspected of being connected to carjackings and violent crimes across Philadelphia. On Wednesday, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Philadelphia released the names of six new defendants in the case who are charged with carjacking and carrying and using a firearm during a crime of violence.Two other defendants, Alex Fernandez-Pena and Juan Jose Rodriguez, were charged in February after allegedly carjacking a rideshare vehicle earlier in 2022 in the Parkside neighborhood in Philadelphia.

Clay Conaway, 23, was previously indicted on six counts of second-degree rape. DOVER, Del. - Delaware prosecutors have reached plea agreements resolving several rape cases against a former University of Delaware athlete already serving a six-year prison sentence for sex offenses. A judge scheduled a plea hearing Wednesday in Sussex County for former UD baseball player Clay Conaway. He's facing five counts of second-degree rape involving four women.

States in New England are reporting a steep increase in daily COVID-19 cases as the Omicron subvariant, BA.2, takes dominance. Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, and New Jersey have seen COVID-19 cases jump more than 40% over the latest 14-day period, the New York Times reports.

Driver in New Jersey paid $4.33 per gallon, and Delaware's gas prices sat at $4.21 on average.  "We try to carpool, we try to just keep things local a little bit and just do our best to save from making extra trips," one New Jersey small business worker said. President Biden announced actions today to help Americans at the pump by ordering gas companies to use idle wells or face a fine from the government. "Right now, oil and gas industries are sitting on nearly 9000 unused but approved permits for production on federal lands are more than a million unused acres they have a right to pump on, families can't afford that company sit on their hands," President Biden said.A more immediate step he announced is the releasing of one million barrels of oil from the strategic petroleum reserve.

Police said an officer was hit by a suspected drunk driver who was later arrested after he sped away. PHILADELPHIA - Authorities say a driver whose license was suspended last year for drunk driving was intoxicated when he plowed into a Philadelphia police officer Wednesday night. Terrell Lee, 41, was charged Thursday with a number of crimes including aggravated assault and aggravated assault while DUI. Chief Inspector Scott Small told reporters that two officers were walking back to their car during a traffic stop on the 6700 block of Torresdale Avenue when the officer nearest the road was struck by a black Chevy that crossed over the double yellow lines. Small said the 44-year-old officer was launched 10 feet and landed on the northbound side of the road.

DOVER, Del. - Delaware officials say they are planning to send $300 in direct payments to taxpayers in the state.News outlets reported Thursday that the payments are part of the state's plan for using a $1 billion budget surplus at a time when inflation is rising and gas prices also are high. Lawmakers said they will introduce legislation within a week. Authorities say the suspect got into a silver Jeep Wrangler with a hardtop, tinted windows and either a Delaware or Maryland temporary license plate.  NEW CASTLE, Del. - Authorities in Delaware are searching for a man who they say tased and assaulted a woman as she was walking to a bus stop last week. Officers from the New Castle County Division of Police were called to the intersection of Buena Vista Drive and Liborio Lane on Tuesday for reports of an assault. A 31-year-old woman said she was walking to the bus stop when a man approached her and asked if her name is Alicia, according to police. When she said no, investigators say the man pushed a taser into her neck and forced her to the ground.

Crews with the Wilmington Fire Department responded to a fire at a two-story home in Wilmington, Delaware.  WILMINGTON, Del. - Units with the Wilmington Fire Department responded to a fatal fire Saturday morning. According to the department, the incident happened just after midnight on Saturday on E. 17th Street. Crews said the fire spread through the walls to the second floor.  When crews arrived, there was heavy fire and smoke on the first floor of a two-story single-family home, fire officials say. One person was found inside as crews began searching inside, according to the fire department.

PHILADELPHIA - The Delaware Valley is bracing for a weekend winter storm that will bring rain and snow along with freezing cold temperatures and whipping winds. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for areas along the I-95 corridor and Philadelphia's north and west suburbs. Parts of the Lehigh Valley will be under a Winter Storm Warning, including the Poconos where forecasters expect around half a foot of snow. FOX 29's Scott Williams says the storm will start with widespread rain showers that could include a rumble of thunder. As temperatures start to fall towards the freezing point, forecasters expect the rain to change over to wet snow during the late-morning. The slushy snow will persist for the first half of the afternoon and begin to lessen around 2 p.m.

DARBY TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Nearly a month after the Briarcliffe Fire Company was suspended for the alleged use of racial slurs on a recent virtual meeting, community members gathered to discuss the future of the department. The Darby Township Board of Commissioners on Wednesday held a special meeting that included many vocal community members who said they no longer trust the department. There was a call to remove the department's certification, but the board decided that they will not make any final decision until the District Attorney's Office is done with its investigation.Briarcliffe Fire Company was suspended after a Jan. 27 virtual meeting between township fire companies and commissioners about a potential consolidation. According to a letter from the Goodwill Fire Company obtained by FOX 29, following the end of the meeting, a group of people remained on the call. The letter says there was then a group of people that could be heard discussing the meeting using foul language, and identifies those involved in the conversation as members of the Briarcliffe Fire Company. A Delaware County fire company has been suspended for 30 days after members of the company allegedly uttered racist and derogatory comments following a virtual meeting late last month.The conversation, which lasted an hour and 45 minutes, allegedly included racial slurs when discussing members of other fire companies and township residents.One of the Briarcliffe Fire Company members was also accused of making a joke about, Fanta Bility, a young girl who was killed in a shooting in Sharon Hill last fall."It’s outright racism,", NAACP Local Chapter President Sheila Carter said.
