Man, woman injured in double shooting overnight in West Philadelphia

Dio Garcia of Philadelphia was arrested in Bensalem.  BENSALEM TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The Bensalem Township Police Department is touting the success of what they call proactive police work after an armed robbery suspect wanted in Philadelphia was arrested during a traffic stop in the Bucks County town. Authorities say on Tuesday, just before 10 a.m., patrol officers saw a 2013 Ford Edge commit a violation while going south on Route 1. According to police, the officers initiated a traffic stop and made contact with 40-year-old Dio Garcia from Philadelphia. A check of the crime system revealed the car Garcia was driving was listed as a felony vehicle with an occupant wanted for a point-of-gun robbery, officials say. Police say Garcia was also wanted out of Florida on a warrant for a probation violation. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESGarcia was taken into police custody and the Ford Edge was towed by police, authorities say. After a search warrant was obtained for the vehicle, a search led to the finding of a container of suspected marijuana and a loaded .40 caliber Beretta handgun, officials say. The gun, which was reported stolen out of Delaware, matched the description of the weapon used in the armed robbery in Philadelphia, per police. Police say Garcia faces several charges in Bensalem and Philadelphia Police are obtaining an arrest warrant for the gunpoint robbery. 

MONTGOMERY COUNTY - Officials say two men are now wanted for the murder of a 25-year-old man who was found dead near the Schuylkill River Trail in Montgomery County last week.Arrest warrants have been issued for Cody Reed, 23, of Norristown, and Marquise Johnson, 23, of Philadelphia, for first-degree murder, robbery and related charges.The murder suspects are accused of killing Daquan Tucker, of Audubon, whose body was found by a bicyclist in a wooded area about 100 feet from the trail down a steep embankment. MORE HEADLINES:Officials say all three men knew each other, and met at Reed's home before walking the trail where the shooting took place. The victim suffered multiple gunshots wounds to the body.A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the suspects' arrest.

PHILADELPHIA - The identity of a suspect police have been searching for in connection to the killing of a transgender victim last year is expected Wednesday.Philadelphia DA Larry Krasner is holding a press conference to announce "the identification of an individual wanted for arrest in the murder of Mar’Quis "MJ" Jackson last December."MORE HEADLINES:Jackson was found dead from blunt force trauma to the head in a backyard in the city's Nicetown neighborhood.The Medical Examiner's Office determined the cause of death as homicide.Family members of Jackson, as well as transgender murder victim Shahere "Diamond" Jackson-McDonald, are also expected speak during the presser.

PHILADELPHIA - A man has been hospitalized after he was shot on Tuesday night. Authorities say officers responded to the 4700 block of Bingham Street in the Crescentville section of the city just before 9 p.m.According to police, three armed suspects pulled a 42-year-old man from his car in a driveway. The man was shot in the neck before the suspects fled north from the driveway in a dark-colored vehicle, officials say. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESPolice transported the victim to Temple University Hospital, where he was placed in critical condition, according to authorities. Officials say the scene was held and no arrests have been made.

BENSALEM, Pa. - A young girl awoke to a terrifying nightmare when police say she found a grown man beside her in her own bed.Police were responding to a burglary in progress on the 300 block of Thunder Circle in Bensalem when they were alerted to the incident.The 9-year-old victim ran out of her room when she woke up next to a burglary suspect wearing just underwear, according to authorities. She told police that the man touched her inappropriately.MORE HEADLINES:She ran to tell her father, who says he found the man sitting on his daughter's bed wrapped in a blanket.The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Paddy Patrick Purcell, fled before police arrived.

PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Police Department is investigating a shooting that left a man critically injured. Police say officers responded to Pennsylvania Hospital for a 19-year-old gunshot victim who was dropped off by a private vehicle early Wednesday morning just before 3 a.m. According to authorities, two suspects were inside the vehicle, believed to be a Nissan, with the victim. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESOfficials say the suspects fired multiple times, hitting the victim throughout his body on the 3200 block of Wharton Street in the South Philadelphia section of the city. The man has been placed in critical condition, authorities say. The investigation is ongoing and active, according to police.

HATBORO, Pa. - A shelter-in-place has been issued in Hatboro after an armed man barricaded himself inside an apartment, authorities say.According to Hatboro Police Chief James Gardner, the incident began just after 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday evening when officers were dispatched for a report of a man with a gun on North York Road.Police say they were responding to reports that the man was pointing a gun at passing traffic.An officer responded to the location and made contact with the man, who then ran into a nearby apartment, officials say.Gardner says officers have attempted to contact the man throughout the night, but he has been unresponsive."At this point, our goal is to get this individual out of the apartment in a peaceful manner and resolve this so no one is injured," Gardner said.Officials say no shots were fired, but officers are still working to negotiate with the man.A shelter-in-place was issued for areas near the apartment as a precaution, authorities say.Nearby school districts were notified about the shelter-in-place and the Hatboro-Horsham School District closed all schools and offices for the day. Several roads in the area have been closed as police continue to investigate. Drivers have been asked to avoid the area. This is a developing story.

She was rescued from a shed behind a home.Family members of the 13-year-old girl are thanking law enforcement for finding the teen and thanking community members for their support. FOX 4 is choosing not to identify the family or the teen because she’s a reported victim of sexual assault.Police say 34-year-old Jorge Camacho took a 13-year-old girl near her home in Dallas and committed multiple sex crimes against her before she was found locked in a shed more than 1,000 miles away on a property in North Carolina.The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office says Camacho had been chatting with the teen through a social media platform. The content was consistent with grooming and enticement. Bianca Davis is CEO of New Friends New Life, a non-profit which works to restore sexually exploited teen girls and more."Traffickers really prey on the everyday needs of teens and places where teens hang out.

PHILADELPHIA - A former hairdresser, a retired school teacher and a longtime retail worker are among the dozens of new officers who will graduate the Philadelphia Police Academy next week. The group of 39 new officers who will swear and oath to protect and serve are largely younger men and women, but a few middle-aged recruits are excited about a second-career."I was actually praying for this job since 2014," 47-year-old Rosmeyra Maldonado told FOX 29's Chris O'Connell.

PHILADELPHIA - Police are searching for the driver of a vehicle that they say fatally struck a woman in West Philadelphia Tuesday night. Shortly after 8 p.m., police were called to the intersection of 49th Street and Lancaster Avenue for reports of an auto accident involving a pedestrian. Responding officers located a 58-year-old woman who had been struck by a vehicle.MORE HEADLINES Medics pronounced the woman dead on scene just before 8:30 p.m.Authorities describe the vehicle as a white Mitsubishi Outlander. Authorities say the SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed through the intersection when it made contact with the victim.

An Arkansas man discovered a 3.29-carat brown diamond at MURFREESBORO, Ark. - A regular visitor became one of the few lucky ones when he spotted a 3.29-carat brown diamond at Arkansas’s Crater of Diamonds State Park. David Anderson, of Murfreesboro, discovered the gem over the weekend while wet-sifting soil from the West Drain of the park’s 37.5-acre diamond search area.Park rangers said it's the largest diamond found at the park this year and the largest since last September. RELATED: Minnesota couple unearths 1.9-carat diamond at Arkansas diamond crater"At first I thought it was quartz but wondered why it was so shiny," Anderson said in a news release. PHILADELPHIA - Strong wind gusts will continue to whip across the region on Wednesday and influence temperatures that will start to turn milder as the week continues. Forecasters picked up wind gusts that reached over 50 MPH in Philadelphia and areas along the New Jersey shore on Tuesday, as a powerful nor'easter scraped past the Delaware Valley. FOX 29's Kathy Orr says those strong wind gusts will continue overnight Tuesday and make temperatures in the 30s and 20s feel like the teens by morning. Daytime temperature in Philadelphia and surrounding areas will stay below 50 degrees with wind gusts of 40 MPH to make conditions feel colder. Winds will die down on Thursday and temperatures will approach the 60s with a mix of sunshine and clouds. A pleasant St. Patrick's Day is in store for the Delaware Valley on Friday as temperatures will reach the low 60s with cloudy skies. An early look at the weekend shows a round of showers on Saturday, followed by sunshine and cooler temperatures in the 40s and 50s. ___ WEDNESDAY: Windy, cool.

Police began an investigation on March 8 after being contacted with "concerns for the safety of a child," and located the baby on March 9 "along the road in the 5300 block of Delaware Street in Warren County." On Monday, officials said that Megan Sta A mother and grandfather in Iowa were arrested after allegedly killing a newborn baby.The Norwalk, Iowa police department said in a press release that Megan Staude, 25, gave birth to a baby in the last days of February. Investigators say that with the help of her father, 64-year-old Rodney Staude, the baby was "left to die" and disposed of along a street in the town.Police began an investigation on March 8 after being contacted with "concerns for the safety of a child," and located the baby deceased on March 9 "along the road in the 5300 block of Delaware Street in Warren County." PHILADELPHIA - One of America's largest and most popular retailers is officially shutting down one of its Philadelphia locations.The Washington Square Target at 1128 Chestnut Street will close for good on May 13 "after multiple years of working to improve performance," according to a Target spokesperson.Currently, 45 part-time and full-time employees work at the Center City location, which opened in 2016. MORE HEADLINES:Official say those employees will be offered the chance to work at a nearby Target. After the Washington Square store closes, nine other Targets will remain open in Philadelphia.The Target closure comes months after Wawa closed two Center City locations due to the rise of crime and violence across the city. 

NFL’s competition committee will consider making roughing-the-passer penalties and personal-foul penalties subject to video review.The two potential rule changes were among nine the league announced Monday in its 2023 playing rules, bylaw and resolution proposals submitted by clubs.The Los Angeles Rams proposed the change that would allow teams to challenge roughing-the-passer calls. PHILADELPHIA - A Philadelphia police officer shot and injured on the job last month is finally heading home after weeks of recovering in the hospital.Officer Giovanni Maysonet was attempting to stop two suspects fleeing a traffic stop on 60th Street on February 8 when a physical struggle ensued.Police say one suspect allegedly fired at least two shots at the officer, hitting him in the chest of his bulletproof vest and an unprotected part of his abdomen. In an audio recording of the incident obtained by FOX 29, Officer Maysonet is heard saying, "I think I'm shot twice.

PHILADELPHIA - Two men were caught yielding an ax and a gun in an attempt to rob a convenience store in Philadelphia's Eastwick section last week.Police say the suspects demanded money from an employee at the Maranatha Grocery Store on West Passyunk Avenue.Video captured one suspect holding the employee at gunpoint as the other carried a wooden box with an ax inside.MORE HEADLINES: With a few swings of the ax, the suspects attempted to break into an ATM.They fled the scene without any stolen items or money, according to police.Police are attempting to identify the suspects, and ask anyone with information to contact them.

PHILADELPHIA - A deadly discovery has launched a shooting investigation in North Philadelphia Tuesday morning.Police found a body laying in a vacant lot when they were called to the 3000 block of North 16th Street around 2:30 a.m.The 28-year-old, who has not been identified, was bleeding from the head and leg, according to authorities.MORE HEADLINES:Three spent shell casings were also found at the scene.A motive is unknown, and a suspect description has yet to be released.

(Credit: WILD Conservation) SYDNEY, Australia - An Australian toddler chasing a deadly snake led to the discovery of a snake's nest with 110 eggs. The WILD Conservation in Sydney posted the story on its Facebook page. The organization said a resident called saying they had problems with eastern brown snakes, and at one point, had 10 hatching snakes in their front garden. RELATED: Famous 14-foot crocodile goes missing in Australia river, considered dangerousA few weeks later, the resident's toddler was found chasing another hatching snake. WILD officials responded and started to dig in the resident's yard where the found more than 100 hatched Eastern Brown Snake eggs.

PHILADELPHIA - State and local leaders gathered Monday to address a growing asbestos problem that's caused Philadelphia public schools to abruptly close and forced students to learn remotely. Simon Gratz middle school reopened Monday after the discovery of asbestos, a cancer-causing material, caused the campus that also houses Simon Gratz High School to close last week. Simon Gratz High School, meanwhile - where the asbestos was found during a district inspection - remained close, but officials say it could reopen on Tuesday.Earlier this month, students at Building 21 in the city's West Oak Lane section were displaced when asbestos was discovered in the stairwells and auditorium. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESThe remediation work forced students to briefly learn virtually and the School District of Philadelphia's plan to relocate students to Strawberry Mansion High School was met with backlash. The asbestos problem in Philadelphia public schools made headlines before the coronavirus pandemic; many of the school buildings are decades old and in dire need of structural upgrades. Philadelphia Councilmember Isaiah Thomas, chairperson of the education committee, called asbestos in schools "one of the most pressing issues we face as a municipality right now." Leaders lauded newly-elected Gov.

REDMOND, Wash. - A Washington woman who died with her husband when a stalker from Texas broke into their home and opened fire told a judge days earlier she'd just had spinal surgery and was struggling with limited mobility as her harasser ignored requests to leave her alone."I have had major back surgery and my mobility has been affected, and I need care 24/7," Zohreh Sadeghi, 33, wrote in an application for an order of protection. LEVITTOWN, Pa. - An arrest has been made in a deadly Bucks County hit-and-run that left a man dead more than one month ago, according to authorities. On Monday, Bucks County District Attorney Matt Weintraub announced the arrest of 45-year-old Daniel Stephen Dietrich of Palmyra, New Jersey, in connection with the death of Jason Smith, 47. According to police, the search for the driver of a pickup truck began after the incident occurred on February 5 around 4:15 p.m. in the parking lot of the McDonald's on the 7700 block of Bristol Pike in Levittown. Authorities say 47-year-old Jason Smith was struck and killed by the driver of a Chevy Silvarado in the parking lot of a Bucks County McDonalds.

PHILADELPHIA - Two Philadelphia police officers are in the hospital recovering after being injured in a car crash on the streets of North Philadelphia. Authorities say the officers were following a stolen car northbound on Broad Street when they struck a white Subaru traveling west on Allegheny Avenue just before 7 p.m.

STRAWBERRY MANSION - A man was stabbed in the neck and killed during what police say was a domestic incident in Strawberry Mansion.22nd District officers responded to the 2500 block of North 30th Street Friday evening, just after 6:30, on the report of a stabbing, officials said.The 44-year-old man was stabbed one time in the neck, according to authorities, as a domestic situation escalated.Police rushed the man to Temple University Hospital where he died a short time later.Police are actively investigating the incident. PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia police say a woman was just trying to get off a bus when she became the victim of a stabbing in the city's Frankford section.The victim, a 44-year-old woman, was stepping off a bus on Pratt and Saul Streets just after midnight when she was stabbed in the forehead by a male suspect.She was transported to a local hospital, where she was placed in stable condition.MORE HEADLINES:Police say a 42-year-old man was taken into custody, and charges are pending at this time.

UNIVERSITY CITY - Police are investigating a crash that killed a 70-year-old man after he was struck by a car. According to police, the crash occurred on March 8, just before 8 p.m., at the intersection of Civic Center Boulevard and University Avenue. Authorities say a silver or gray SUV hit a 70-year-old man. The driver of the vehicle got out of his car and saw the 70-year-old on the ground before he got back into his car and left the area going south on University Avenue, officials say. MORE LOCAL HEADLINESPolice say the victim was transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition.

WISSINOMING - Philadelphia firefighters battled a two-alarm blaze in a business in Philadelphia’s Wissinoming neighborhood.Officials said fire crews were called to the 6100 block of Frankford Avenue Sunday afternoon, around 3:30, for a reported fire at a Dollar Tree.When they arrived, firefighters were met with heavy smoke and flames streaming from the building.As they worked to get a handle on the blaze, it continued to grow and a second alarm was called within about a half hour after crews arrived.It took firefighters about an hour and a half to bring the blaze under control.The store was open when the fire started. Fire officials said everyone in the building evacuated safely and there were no injuries to customers, employees or firefighters.The cause of the fire is under investigation.
