Mayo medical student running marathon to raise funds for PPE

A Mayo student has started to run a marathon in his garden, to raise funds to purchase personal protective equipment (PPE) for frontline healthcare workers.

Cathal Freeman is a second-year medical student at the University of Limerick. The Tooreen clubman started the ball rolling on Twitter earlier this week, saying he would undertake the challenge, if his post got more than 2,000 retweets.

As word spread, he soon found himself preparing to make good on his pledge. A GoFundMe page set up to collect donations has raised in excess of €16,000 so far.

All money raised will be divided between the Heath Service Executive and the Irish Cancer Society. Mr Freeman has taken a break from studying for upcoming exams to plot out a makeshift
