Andy Burnham has called on government to ramp up its coronavirus measures by ordering people to stay at home unless absolutely necessary.
The mayor said such a rule needed to be enforceable and ought to only have ‘a very limited number of exceptions’, such as allowing people out to pick up shopping.
Calling the government’s messaging ‘mixed and confused’ so far, he said it now ‘urgently needs to move to a new policy’. His comments came after country parks and beauty spots were swamped with visitors over the weekend, including for Mother’s Day, as pictures emerged of busy car parks at attractions such as Hollingworth Lake.
