The number of people who have died in the UK after contracting coronavirus has hit 27,510. The death toll is up by 739 from 26,771 at the same point yesterday (Thursday), according to the latest update from the Department of Health.

A total of 6,201 people have tested positive in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the UK to 177,454.

A total of 122,347 tests were carried out yesterday, which meant the government succeeded in reaching a target of 100,000 tests per day by the end of April.

The daily death toll now includes people who have died in hospitals, care homes and the wider community after the government changed the way they reported figures earlier this week.
