More than 500 fines handed out to people defying coronavirus lockdown in Scotland

Police have fined more than 500 people already in Scotland alone, as selfish Brits flout lockdown rules with house parties and other social gatherings.

Police Scotland Chief Constable Iain Livingstone is determined that his officers remain restrained however, and not resort to such tactics as patrolling supermarket aisles.

Police have been warned against overreaching their authority amid reports the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) and College of Policing are rushing through guidance reminding officers of the limits of their powers under the law.

These include that that they are not entitled to tell people what is an essential purchase from a shop or stop them driving to a secluded location to exercise.
