More than 800 people are in hospital with Covid-19 for the first time since April. A total of 812 patients with the virus are in hospital as of 8am this morning - up 14 on the same time yesterday.

Professor Seamus Linnane, consultant in respiratory medicine yesterday said there are currently a large number of incidental Covid-19 cases in hospital, where patients are admitted to hospital for another issue, and are then found to be infected.

Prof Linnane said the latest wave is due to variants being much more transmissible than before, but the illness is not as severe for most people.

Meanwhile, Dr Tony Holohan is stepping down as Chief Medical Officer today after 14 years in the role. Dr Holohan announced his resignation in March.
