Nearly 1,500 coronavirus cases confirmed in 24 hours as death toll rises to 422

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK has risen to more than 8,000 and the death toll has passed 400. There are now 8,077 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK - that number is up by 1,427 from 6,650 at the same time yesterday.

The death toll in the UK has increased from 335 to 422. More than 90,000 people have now been tested in the UK. Around 5,000 tests are currently carried out each day but the government says it is ramping up testing capacity to 25,000 a day.

The latest update from the Department of Health reads: "As of 9am on 24 March 2020, a total of 90,436 people have been tested, of which 82,359 were confirmed negative and 8,077 were confirmed positive.
