The number of people who have sadly died in hospital in the UK after contracting coronavirus has risen by 980 in the past day.
A total of 8,958 people have now died after contracting the virus - up from Thursday's figure of 7,978. On Thursday 19,116 coronavirus tests were carried out across Great Britain, of which 5,706 came back positive.
The number of people in hospital who have the disease now stands at 19,304. The government's figures on deaths relate to patients who have died in hospital and does not include deaths in the community, for example in care homes, so the true death toll will be higher.
Out of the new UK deaths, NHS England confirmed 866 occurred in hospitals in England, bringing the total death toll in England to 8,114.
