New coronavirus cases dropped by half in seven days in the UK with less than 5,000 Brits contracting the killer bug each day, according to fresh data.
An analysis of the COVID Symptom Tracker's figures suggests there had been 9,400 new cases per day a week earlier before that figure dropped by 48 per cent.
However, the true rate is likely much higher, as the latest data - collected between May 24 and June 6 - does not include Northern Ireland or any UK care homes - where the virus is still spreading.
