An emerging Covid epicentre has formed in the Midlands where the majority of the worst hit areas now lie. Newly released data from Public Health England show 13 of the 20 places with the highest infection rates are in the region.
At the top of the list is North West Leicestershire, where 197.9 people out of every 100,000 caught the virus in the seven days up to February 28.
Corby, Northants, with 188.3, and Leicester, with 188, follow right behind. Of the 20 most impacted areas, only Barnsley, Bolton, Preston, Bradford and Hull are not in the Midlands, as well as Peterborough and Fenland which sit nearby in Cambridgeshire.
