Sturgeon has renewed her plea for Rishi Sunak to maintain the job-saving furlough scheme as the chancellor warned of “hardship ahead” and ruled out any further extension.
Sunak said it is “not sustainable” to carry on with the furlough scheme that has paid the wages of over 680,000 Scots beyond October as the UK heads for a post-pandemic recession.
Speaking on the Andrew Marr Show this morning, Sunak said: “The furloughing scheme has protected around nine million jobs, a million businesses, two and a half million self-employed people.
