For the first time since the pandemic struck in Oldham there are no COVID-19 patients being treated on ventilators in hospital.
In a rare ray of light during the crisis, health chiefs have confirmed that none of the people being treated for coronavirus in the borough are hooked up to mechanical ventilators.
Mechanical ventilation is required for some of the most seriously ill patients in intensive care units, when the virus has caused their lungs to fail.
The ventilator takes over the body’s breathing process, pushing air with increased levels of oxygen into the lungs. This gives the patient time to fight off the infection and recover.
