The National Public Health Emergency Team will meet today to discuss the path of Covid-19 in Ireland as Opposition parties call for clarification on what the Government knew at the weekend about NPHET's concerns over the rise in cases.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan has said he is "deeply concerned" by the spread of the coronavirus since Sunday, when NPHET recommended the country be placed at Level 5, the highest level of restrictions.

Health officials said there has been a "significant deterioration" as the disease is growing by 4% each day, and it is predicted that if nothing changes, the number of daily cases could reach around 1,300 at the start of next month.
