President Donald Trump has said he intends to sign an executive order to temporarily suspend all immigration into the United States because of the coronavirus pandemic. "In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well asthe need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens, Iwill be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspendimmigration into the United States," Mr Trump said in a tweet.
The US death toll from the virus now stands at over 42,000. The United States has by far the world's largest number of confirmed coronavirus cases, with more than 790,000 infections.
The US economy has ground to a standstill due to the coronavirus and more than 22 million people have applied for unemployment benefits in the last month.
