Special summer school programmes set for Cabinet approval

The Cabinet is expected to sign off on proposals today for a special summer programme for students who attend disadvantaged schools.

890 primary and post primary schools will be asked to opt in to the programme, which is likely to run for a week in August prior to the reopening of schools in September.

The lengthy school closures caused by the coronavirus pandemic have been especially damaging for children and young people with intellectual disabilities or conditions such as autism, and also those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

RTÉ News understands that the Minister for Education will bring proposals for both these groups to Cabinet later today. It is understood that all DEIS (Delivering Equality of Opportunity) schools will be invited to
