An NHS surgeon who volunteered to fight the coronavirus pandemic has fallen victim to the disease. Dr Adil El Tayar, an organ transplant consultant, had treated patients around the world and more recently worked at St Mary’s and St George’s hospitals in London.
As the UK scales up its fight against Covid-19, the Sudanese doctor had signed up to help in the A&E and general department of Hereford Hospital in the Midlands.
But after testing positive for the disease himself, he died on Wednesday at West Middlesex Hospital in Isleworth, west London.
The 63-year-old is believed to be the first working surgeon in the UK to die from coronavirus. His cousin, the journalist Zeinab Badawi, told BBC Radio 4’s From Our Own Correspondent programme that
