COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Customs on Monday (21) took steps to repatriate the last 45 containers out of 242 containers containing garbage arrived from Britain, which was the subject of much controversy in the recent past.The containers were shipped back to Britain by the vessel Ever Genius, which arrived at the CICT terminal in the Colombo Port yesterday. The ship is scheduled to leave the Port of Colombo around 8.00 pm on Monday (21).In 2019, an investigation by the Social Protection Division of the Sri Lanka Customs found 242 containers containing clinical waste, used cushions and mattresses, plastic waste and unsorted and hazardous waste imported into the country from Britain.It was revealed that 112 containers had been deposited at the Port of Colombo and the remaining 130 containers had already been cleared from the port and stored at the premises of a private company operating under the Board of Investment (BOI) in Katunayake.According to the customs investigation, the containers were imported contrary to the provisions of the international convention known as Basel Convention and in violation of the provisions of the National Environmental Act and the Customs Ordinance.During the Customs investigation, the Center for Environmental Justice filed a case in the Court of Appeal.

Police say a male is in custody, but that further details were not available. Tequila could become America’s favorite liquor, data trends show

Tequila popularity has been steadily growing since 2002 and in 2021 alone, 26.9 million 9-liter cases of tequila were sold, according to the Distilled Spirits Council. Compared to vodka, which still has the top spot in Americans’ hearts, tequila sales grew by 30.1% compared to vodka sales which only grew by 4.9% in 2021 alone. "As of 2021, agave-based spirits are the third largest spirits category in the US, behind vodka and whisky. Agave spirits are set to continue on their growth path, fueled by a mix of drivers, including authenticity, product diversity and consumer engagement," according to IWSR which analyzes and tracks alcohol trends. Americans’ consumption of tequila rose 30% between 2015 and 2020, according to IWSR. Tequila also drove industry growth, accounting for nearly one-third of the total increase in spirits revenue, according to the Distilled Spirits Council.

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka’s Court of Appeal on Monday (7) ordered to grant bail to Attorney-at-Law Hejaaz Hizbullah who was arrested and remanded under the provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).In addition, the bail order was directed to the Chilaw High Court as well.The order for bail was made when the revision application for bail on behalf of Attorney-at-Law Hejaaz Hizbullah was taken up at the Court of Appeal in the presence of Justices Menaka Wijesundara and Neil Iddawela.Attorney-at-Law Hejaaz Hizbullah was arrested on the 14th of April 2020 with regard to a sermon that was delivered for students at a Madrasa School in Puttlam.After 18 months in detention, Attorney-at-Law Hejaaz Hizbullah was prosecuted under the PTA by the Attorney General at the Puttlam High Court.However, two requests for bail from the High Court were rejected previously.Thereafter, an application for bail was filed with the Court of Appeal.
