COLOMBO (News 1st) – The National Child Protection Authority has launched a separate investigation into an incident where grade 5 students from a school in Millaniya were brutally beaten for allegedly stealing money from a school teacher.Several Grade Five students from the Millaniya Primary School in Horana were accused of stealing money from the bag of a school teacher and were punished by the school teachers, and the teachers themselves handed over the students to the local police.Parents allege that students were taken away by police intimidated by electric shock treatment inside the Police Jeep, and dropped back at the school.Two boys told News 1st that the police officers took them away in a jeep and threatened them with electric shocks to reveal the truth, and thereafter dropped them back at school.News 1st contacted the Chairman of the National Child Protection Authority Udaya Kumara over these allegations he said the local Judicial Medical Officer confirmed the boys were tortured."Based on the facts, the National Child Protection Authority has considered this a serious offence. Any wrong committed by a child below the age of 12, according to Sri Lankan law, cannot be considered a crime," he said.The NCPA Chairman also told News 1st that on Tuesday (8) the police officers in question, the principal and the teachers have been summoned to the National Child Protection Authority to record their statements. "We will also produce them in court on Tuesday (8).

COLOMBO (News 1st) – International slavery continues to be a modern day curse that plagues our world.News 1st has for many years battled against international slavery, with a particular focus on Sri Lankan Domestic Workers who are all too often held captive in the Middle East.In the recent past, News 1st has warned that Sri Lanka's current economic crisis would result in increasing numbers of Sri Lankan women being trapped into slavery as thousands more venture overseas to escape poverty.  Now our worst fears have been realised.News 1st brings to you the shocking revelation that more than 50 women have been sent into slavery in Dubai by two job agencies in the central cities of Anuradhapura and Kurunegala, in a report filed by News 1st's Nisal Sooriyarachchi, and Naveksha Gunasekera.A foreign employment agency in Anuradhapura has trafficked more than 50 women to work as virtual slave labour in the state of Dubai where most of them are currently been held against their will in atrocious conditions. Several women who who fell victim to this scam have revealed that the agency headed by 3 women living in Dubai. Thushara Nilmini, a resident of Anuradhapura, who finally made her way back to Sri Lanka after falling victim to the scam, said that between 50 and 60 women who went abroad for domestic work are being held captive in various areas of Dubai. Chandrika, who asked that her full name not be revealed, has gone to work as a domestic worker in Dubai and is currently in a destitute state there. News 1st managed to obtain a telephone interview while she is in Dubai.She said that they stayed at the agency for about a month, and barely got anything to eat. "Then they stationed us at this safe house.

REDDING, Calif. - Who knew getting injured by a runaway bull at a rodeo would actually lead to a cancer diagnosis? Paige King didn’t think so. The 25-year-old from Redding, California, said she took a trip to the local rodeo with her boyfriend back in May. King said during the last run, a bull broke out from the arena and was on the loose among spectators. RELATED: Genetically modified herpes virus shows promise in killing advanced cancer, study says"I looked to my left, and then all of a sudden, I look right back, and he’s [the bull] just coming right over the barrier right on top of us," she continued. King said she doesn’t exactly remember what happened next. "It’s something no one would ever think that would happen," Paige King said."I end up going to the ground, and all I can really remember after that is him [the bull] just picking me up," she added. King said she didn’t notice pain at first but her back eventually started to hurt. She said she believes the runaway bull’s hoof scraped her back leaving her with scratches, bruises, and fractures— which have now healed. But that was only the beginning of her medical journey. King said while getting checked out, doctors noticed a lump in her throat. She was then diagnosed with thyroid cancer. "I was just kind of taken back in shock.

COLOMBO (News 1st) – More details have surfaced about a headless corpse that was dragged away by a crocodile in Akuressa, in Sri Lanka's south.The presence of Crocodiles in Hulandawa, Akuressa doesn't usually shock the local residents, however, what they saw in the Nilwala River on Wednesday (28) evening, had sent shivers down their spines.Residents of Pathovita in Hulandawa were shocked when they saw this crocodile dragging the headless corpse of a man in the Nilwala river. The crocodile with a headless corpse between its teeth had attempted to come ashore on Wednesday (28) evening, however, it went swam back into the depths of the river after seeing a large crowd on the river bank.Attempts by the area residents to locate the body on Thursday (29) were unsuccessful. The area residents identified the clothes on the corpse being dragged around by the crocodile as those belonging to Palanisamy Aarumugam who was reported missing on Wednesday (28).Palanisamy a father of two was a daily wage earner at a Katupol Plantation. Since his daily income of between  700 to 800 rupees was not sufficient to feed his children he had taken up fishing to make ends meet.What is even more unfortunate was that he had not gone to work on Wednesday (28) due to an injury, and decided to go fishing as he had no other way to feed his children, since his wife too had left them.Arumugam who went fishing to feed his kids never came back.Arumugam was well aware of the threat posed by crocodiles in the river but was desperate as he had no other way to feed his children. The loss of this single parent has now left two small children all alone in this world, with no one to take care of them.

PHILADELPHIA - Two Philadelphia business owners woke up shocked on Sunday morning when they realized their three-week-old food truck had vanished. Philadelphia police say at around 5:30 Sunday morning, someone drove a U-Haul truck onto a private lot in Bridesburg and left with the Lui's Kitchen Food Truck attached to its trailer. Kris and Trisha Dogiewicz, owners of the food truck, say they poured money, time, and energy into their mobile restaurant for months until it came to fruition just three weeks ago. "We're trying to make some good Philly food with a southern twist," said Kris Dogiewicz.Lui's Kitchen Food Truck, named after Kris and Trisha's one-year-old daughter, is a popular stop among locals as the couple says they sold out of all their food at an event the day before it was stolen. "It was very, very promising. We were on a high on Saturday night, and we were like, 'This is great."
