New data has revealed the 23 hospital trusts where over a third of beds are occupied by coronavirus patients. Of the 23 worst hit, occupancy was found to be rising in all but one - while three trusts, North Middlesex in north London, as well as Medway and Dartford and Gravesham in Kent, had more than half of general and acute beds occupied by coronavirus patients.
The data, which does not include intensive care beds, found several trusts saw their coronavirus patients soar within one week at a rate which would soon see them entirely filled by those with the virus.
If the figure continues to rise, the situation could bring "radical consequences for emergency hospital care" at the worst-hit trusts, the Health Service Journal ( HSJ ) reports.
