Deansgate closed to traffic this week, kicking off a huge debate among motorists, environmentalists, politicians and businesses.
But cars used to dominate lots of other pedestrianised city centre streets too. Forcing your way through the throng of shoppers, chuggers and buskers on Market Street on any - pre-lockdown - day, it's hard to imagine the shopping precinct was once a busy thoroughfare.
But for much of the 20th Century that's exactly what it was. And much like the pedestrianisation of Deansgate, which has been under discussion for at least the last decade, the debate over the closure of Market Street dragged on and on too.
