Tributes have been paid to an 'outstanding' NHS doctor who has died after contracting coronavirus. Dr Poornima Nair worked at the Station View Medical Centre in Bishop Auckland, County Durham, and spent a lengthy time in hospital fighting the virus.

Her family shared the news of her death on the University Hospital of North Tees Hospital on Facebook yesterday. The practice has also shared a statement on its website, describing the doctor as "much loved and valued", going on to say how she fought the killer bug "with her great strength of character".

Sarah Westgarth, practice manager, told BBC Look North Dr Nair "lit up any room she walked into". Bishop Auckland MP Dehenna Davison said she was saddened to hear of the “heartbreaking loss”,
