The number of people who have died due to coronavirus in the UK has risen to 6,227 today. The death toll in Britain jumped by 854 in the previous 24 hours.
This is almost double the number recorded in Monday's figures, which recorded 439 deaths. The figures on deaths relate to patients who have died in hospital and does not include deaths in the community, for example in care homes, so the true death toll will be higher.
The number of deaths recording in England alone was 748, bringing total deaths in country to 5,655. The figures have been released by NHS England, showing 224 of the deaths were in London, 142 in the Midlands and 101 in the east of England.
