Teachers' unions are calling for an urgent review of physical distancing requirements for schools. Appearing before the Oireachtas Special Committee on Covid-19, union representatives also warned of what they describe as a 'chronic and massive' shortage of teachers, particularly in secondary schools in urban areas.
Kieran Christie, General-Secretary of the Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland, outlined some of the issues being highlighted by second-level principals and staff.
Mr Christie said he had several questions, including why no guidance had been given on the numbers that could congregate for school assemblies and staff meetings.
