Johnson & Johnson's single-dose Covid-19 shot is expected to be authorised by the European Union on Thursday, the bloc's fourth vaccine in the fight to end its chapter of the pandemic.

The Government is expecting that Ireland will receive 600,000 doses of this new vaccine during the second quarter of the year.

Here's what we know. How safe and effective is it? Results from the global trial of 40,000 people show that no one died from Covid-19 after receiving the vaccine, compared to seven people who died who got the placebo.

Overall, the vaccine prevented moderate to severe Covid-19 by 66.1% 28 days after the shot, but this rose to 85.4% when considering only severe disease.
