Modern slaves will be allowed to stay in safe houses for longer during the coronavirus outbreak. Those supported through the modern slavery victim care contract will be allowed to stay in government-funded safe accommodation for the next three months.

The decision comes as the government steps up measures to protect the vulnerable from coronavirus. The National Referral Mechanism (NRM) is the system of support for people believed to have been victims of modern slavery.

Normally, people can access support, including accommodation for at least 45 days if found to be potential victims, through the NRM.
