Woman arrested and fined £660 for breaking new coronavirus lockdown rules

A woman who failed to justify her reasons for essential travel has become the first person to be arrested and fined on the railways under new coronavirus laws.

Marie Dinou, 41, was fined more than £600 after she was unable to give a valid reason for using the railway during the pandemic.

Dinou, from York, was reported to police by railway staff after she was seen loitering between platforms at Newcastle Central station at around 8am on Saturday.

Police approached Dinou and engaged with her in a bid to understand her reasons for essential travel.But following several more attempts by officers to explain and encourage her, she refused to explain herself.She was arrested on suspicion of breaching the restrictions imposed under the new
