The town now has a rate of 274 new infections per 100,000 people, nearly 12 times higher than the national average and accounting for 788 positive tests in the week to May 12.
However, there are only 19 people currently being treated for the virus at the Royal Bolton Hospital, the Health Secretary has said.
The majority of these patients were eligible for a vaccination and have not had one, prompting Mr Hancock to urge anyone who can get vaccinated to get their jab.
