TAMPA, Fla. - The surging gas prices have made fuel a prime target for thieves, officials say, and Hillsborough authorities just took an organized theft ring, arresting multiple people in the process.Sheriff Chad Chronister said their investigation began in February after the agency received a phone call about two Circle K gas stations with "tremendous fuel discrepancies." He said by the end of the investigation, a total of seven suspects were identified, one of which may have fled to Cuba.

The other six were booked into county jail over the weekend.Chronister said detectives responded to the initial report, saying they began combing through surveillance footage and noticing a pattern of 7 separate trucks at both locations.READ: The complicated reasons gas prices are so high – and what we can do about it"These individuals would defeat the lock mechanism and remove the pulsar device," Sheriff Chronister explained, adding that those devices are used to calculate the gallons that are pumped. "They would remove that device and insert their own homemade device.

They were able to pump that fuel into large bladders"Hillsborough detectives said at least $60,000 worth of gas was stolen."What were they doing with the fuel?

They would take it to two different sites-- one of them by the Tampa International Airport and one by the Orient Road Jail," the sheriff said. "[They were] vacant lots to keep trucks."There, they would sell the gas immediately, Chronister said, charging up to $3 per gallon."These thieves saw this as an opportunity to sell this fuel to the bulk fuel site," he said.

Poll: Philadelphians are more pessimistic than they have been in over a decade
PHILADELPHIA - A new poll from the Pew Research Center found that Philadelphia residents are the most pessimistic they have been in over a decade. Researchers found that 63% of people polled believe that Philadelphia is on the wrong track, with gun violence receiving the lion's share of the blame. According to the latest data from the Philadelphia Police Department, there have been 127 homicides in the city this year which outpaces a historically bloody 2021. "A lot of evidence that crime has gone up, and it makes people very frustrated, very scared, and very at a loss of what to do about it," Attorney and CEO of Advocate To Win Heather Hansen said.U.S. Attorney Jennifer Arbittier Williams stopped by Good Day Philadelphia to discuss the ‘All Hands on Deck’ initiative that focused local, state, and federal law enforcement efforts on stopping gun violence. She believes that the COVID-19 pandemic secluded people from societal norms of behaving with courtesy, as evident by a violence spike in hospitals and airplanes. "It’s in large part because we’ve forgotten how to be patient, how to wait, how to interact in public," Hansen said.Philadelphians exhausted and frightened by the constant threat of violence, drugs and other street crimes would like to see more police, according to the poll. "I’m just concerned," said Jeff Benson, who has a daughter that lives in Philadelphia.

New Jersey woman accused of reporting fake shooting to get out of traffic stop
CLEMENTON, N.J. - A woman is facing charges after authorities in Camden County say she made a bogus 911 call about a shooting in an effort to distract an officer who had pulled her over. On Monday afternoon, authorities say the Gloucester Township Police Communications Center received a 911 call about a shooting at the Millbridge Garden Apartment Complex in Clementon.Authorities say when officers were responding to the area, they did not observe a shooting scene, and they made several calls to the residents of the complex. Investigators traced the cell phone number back to Katelynne Hunter-Fisher, which dispatchers were able to recognize from a motor vehicle stop that was in progress at the time the 911 call was made.Responding officers verified that there was no shooting at the apartment complex, and they were able to locate the Hunter-Fisher in Lindenwold. Police determined that Hunter-Fisher called in the false shooting report in an attempt to distract the officers from completing the motor vehicle stop. Hunter-Fisher, 35, was arrested for filing a false police report and obstruction of justice. ___MORE LOCAL HEADLINES___DOWNLOAD: FOX 29 NEWS APP | FOX 29 WEATHER AUTHORITY APPSUBSCRIBE: Good Day Digest Newsletter | FOX 29 Philly on YouTubeAdvertisementFOLLOW: Facebook | Instagram | Twitter
