An actress has been slammed by Chinese social media users after she praised a ban eating cats and dogs. Karen Mok, a Hong Kong-based singer and actress, praised the new ban on dog and cat meat brought in by some provinces in China.

Some Chinese social media users reacted furiously, accusing the 49-year-old of calling China "uncivilised". The move was brought in by the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, which lies just across the border from Hong Kong.

It followed a resolution by the Chinese government to ban the trading and consumption of wild animals. The move by the communist regime's National People's Congress in February came after the trade of wild animals in so-called wet markets was blamed for helping to spread the coronavirus.
