Alex Salmond has been acquitted of a string of sexual offences including rape. The former first minister of Scotland vowed that evidence of a "plot to discredit him" would "see the light of day" after a trial jury returned a not guilty verdict this morning.
Mr Salmond, 65, was cleared of 13 charges against nine women following an 11-day trial at the High Court in Edinburgh. A charge that had originally been on the indictment was dropped earlier in the proceedings.
The Scottish politician had denied all the charges and told the court that some of the allegations were “deliberate fabrications for a political purpose”.
