MUMBAI : Commercial vehicle (CV) manufacturer Ashok Leyland Ltd has reported total domestic sales of 1,277 units in May, thereby recording a sharp drop of 90% year-on-year, on losing about two weeks last month due to the pandemic-induced lockdown.

After reporting nil sales in April, the company had, on 13 May, notified that it resumed operations across all of its production units after obtaining necessary approvals from the local authorities.

Ashok Leyland had sold 12,778 units in May last year. The company’s domestic wholesales for the last month included 1,126 units of the light commercial vehicles (LCVs) and 151 units of the medium and heavy trucks or MHCVs.

Maruti Suzuki cuts production by 98% in May amid coronavirus pandemic
NEW DELHI : The country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) on Tuesday said it cut production by 97.54% in May at 3,714 units amid coronavirus pandemic, according to a regulatory filing by the company.The company had produced a total of 1,51,188 units in the same month last year.Total passenger vehicle production stood at 3,652 units last month as against 1,48,095 units in May 2019, a decline of 97.53%, it added.The company cut production of its mini cars comprising Alto, and S-Presso by 98.32% at 401 units as against 23,874 units in the year-ago month.It reduced production of compact cars, including WagonR, Celerio, Ignis, Swift, Baleno, OEM Model (Glanza supplied to Toyota) and Dzire by 97.69% at 1,950 units as compared to 84,705

Geneva: Studies show people with the coronavirus are most infectious when they first show symptoms, Maria van Kerkhove, an epidemiologist and the World Health Organization's technical lead on the pandemic, said in a briefing on Tuesday.She said a sub-set of people do not develop symptoms, but can still infect others, and as many as 40% of transmissions may be by asymptomatic cases. Wearing a mask reduces the possibility of asymptomatic transmission or 'pre-symptomatic' transmission, she said.
