Hundred of bikes once hung from the vertical racks at Sweet Pete’s. More bikes stood side-by-side on the floor. Now, there are a lot of empty hooks and plenty of floor space.

It might seem as if business is booming at the store amid COVID-19. After all, more and more Canadians are looking to pedal power over public transit during the global pandemic, and parents are buying bikes for their cooped-up kids.

But owner Pete Lilly, who has three Sweet Pete’s shops in Toronto, is concerned about the company’s future. Because while bikes are leaving the store, few are coming in. “It looks and feels like we’re going out of business,” Lilly said. “The cupboards are bare.” Lilly’s store in west Toronto has stocked as many as 700 bikes at a time.

Suspect surrenders after hours long standoff at West Philadelphia home, police say

PHILADELPHIA - Authorities gathered outside a home in West Philadelphia on Wednesday night after police said a recently evicted tenant locked himself inside with two young children.Officers from the Philadelphia Police Department were called to a home on the 5500 block of West Girard Avenue just before 8 p.m.According to police, a 36-year-old man who was recently evicted from the property changed all the locks and violated a Protection From Abuse order. Police: Gunman opens fire on officer during shootout in Germantown, no injuries reported

PHILADELPHIA - No one was injured after a gunman opened fire on a Philadelphia police officer during a shootout Wednesday afternoon in Germantown.Philadelphia Police Sergeant Eric Gripp told reporters that two plainclothes officers in an unmarked car were patrolling the 4800 block of Keyser Street around 2 p.m. when they came upon a shootout between a 23-year-old and a 20-year-old. The officer in the passenger's seat identified himself as police and ordered both men to drop their weapons when one of the men fired towards the officer, Gripp said. The officer ducked behind cover as the suspect attempted to flee down Keyser Street. According to investigators, the officer that was still inside the vehicle drove after the suspect and fired once through the windshield but missed.
