Seeing these happy children unwrap their Christmas gifts was all the more poignant for their families this year. They are among the 92 youngsters in England who received the ultimate gift of a lifesaving transplant since Max and Keira’s Law came into force in May.
The law is named after 10-year-old Max Johnson, who was saved by a new heart donated by Keira Ball, nine. And since the opt-out donor register was created for the very first time, the lives of hundreds of people have been saved.
Here, three families reveal how a transplant has transformed their lives. For more information about organ donation and how to sign up to the register, visit organdonation.nhs.uk.
