Bars and pubs have been ordered to close in some parts of California over fears that drinkers are inadvertently spreading coronavirus.
State governor Gavin Newsom issued the order for bars to close in Los Angeles and six other counties after a dramatic rise in cases in recent days.
It follows moves by Texas and Florida to shut all their bars last week. Public health officials in California and throughout the United States believe bars are the riskiest non-essential businesses currently open.
It represents the first major rollback of efforts to reopen the economy in the most populous US state as coronavirus cases nationwide soar to record levels day after day.
