Cans, nappies and takeaways dumped as Brits 'forget coronavirus' to hit beaches

Thousands of Brits flocked to Blackpool beach on Wednesday, enjoying highs of 26C on the sand and in the sea. The hottest day of the year so far saw huge numbers of people lapping up the sun in public spaces.

Photos from Wednesday showed beaches at Bournemouth, Brighton, Essex and other coastal areas crammed with swimmers and sunbathers in scenes more suited to August than May - and not at all suitable in the middle of a global pandemic. "It's madness, it's like everyone's forgotten about coronavirus," one man said.

Revellers also travelled up to Blackpool and Southport to enjoy clean beaches that had gone unused for months. But few cleaned up after themselves, and beer bottles, plastic buckets and waste was left abandoned.
