A convicted paedophile who was awaiting trial for further child sex charges has died in prison from coronavirus. Leslie Pieroni, 51, was being held in prison without bail after being charged with sexually abusing a 13-year-old boy.

He had previously been convicted of sexually assaulting two children in 2006, for which he received an eight-year prison sentence, ABC7 Chicago reports.

Pieroni was being held at Cook County Jail in Chicago, but was taken to hospital last week after testing positive for Covid-19.

A spokesman for the Cook County Sheriff's Office said Pieroni had died "as the result of complications due to the virus". Pieroni is the second prisoner from the same jail to have died from coronavirus in the past week.
