Coronavirus crackdown: Shops told not to sell Easter eggs as ‘they are not essential’

A trade body has warned that stores have been wrongly told to limit the items they sell to just “essentials”. Newsagents, who were told could stay open during the Covid-19 pandemic, have reportedly been targeted by officials trying to limit what they can sell.

Some shops have even been told they cannot sell Easter eggs as they are considered non-essential items and owners were even told, in some cases, to remove them from the shelves.

The Association of Convenience Stores slammed “overzealous enforcement” and “misreading” of rules as being the reason behind the clampdown.
