The weekly number of coronavirus deaths in England and Wales rose by nearly 50% in just seven days, figures released this morning show.
It is the fourth week in a row that the death toll has risen, as new restrictions are put in place to stop the spread of the virus.
Latest data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveals that there were 321 Covid-19 deaths in the week ending October 2 - compared with 215 the week before.
This accounts for more than three in every 100 deaths from all causes, the data shows. The North West had the highest number of coronavirus deaths, with 106 recorded.
