Coronavirus global death toll hits 12,000 with over a third recorded in Italy

The global death toll from coronavirus now stands at an estimated 12,000 — with more than a third of them being recorded in Italy.

More than 274,800 people have been infected around the world with the epicentre now in Europe. Italian deaths rocketed to 4825 yesterday — up 793 from the previous day.It was by far the largest daily rise — over 19 per cent — since the disease emerged in the country just a month ago.

Almost all the country now finds itself in lockdown conditions. Italy overtook China as the country to register most deaths from the deadly virus last Thursday.
