Coronavirus sick pay scheme is open for applications - how does it work?

In a bid to further compensate businesses who have fallen short amid the coronavirus pandemic, the government has today launched a scheme to help employers cover the costs of sick pay.

Titled the Coronavirus Statutory Sick Pay Rebate Scheme, applications are being welcomed from small and medium-sized employers with fewer than 250 members of staff to recover the costs of paying coronavirus-related Statutory Sick Pay (SSP).

They can claim for up to two weeks - worth nearly £200 per employee. The scheme was first announced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak at the Budget and is now an online service being run by HMRC.
