Cocaine smugglers stashed £1million of the Class A drug in a consignment of face masks bound for Britain, investigators have revealed.
Border Force officers swooped on a Polish-registered van which was attempting the enter the UK through the Channel Tunnel. The team stopped the vehicle at the UK control zone in Coquelles, near Calais, on Tuesday – and found a box of 15 wrapped packages hidden inside the van, which was transporting boxes of protective face masks to be used by those on the front line of the coronavirus battle.
Inside, they discovered 14 kilos of cocaine. The National Crime Agency – dubbed “Britian's FBI” - accused the smugglers of trying to exploit the Covid-19 crisis.
